How I found my NYC Roommate- from across the country

My original plan was to live alone. I didn’t know anyone in the city and had no clue where to start. I’ve never lived alone and always valued having roommates and realized with so many changes coming, the roommate experience was one I wanted to keep. So I started searching. I read so many blogs and watched so many videos. Through all of that I found a ton of options. But after trying a bunch, I decided to stick with a website called Diggz. I was stuck in Georgia so setting everything up to move without being able to visit before was very intimidating but having my roommate to coordinate with made it much easier.

On Diggz you fill out a dating like profile about everything a potential roommate might need to know. I liked how thorough it was and by having that information from the get go it avoids the need to awkwardly ask. You can then “like” profiles and if they like you back an option to message opens up. From there I talked to a few people and eventually gave my current roommate my phone number because we seemed compatible. And it worked out pretty well!

I am sure there are tons of other websites like it as well as Facebook groups that I have heard people use but Diggz is what worked for me.

Here is the layout of the Diggz profile:

And then based on this information it shows you profiles and gives a percentage they match to you and ranks the profiles by compatibility. Something I also appreciated was since it is targeted for people looking for roommates in NYC is the neighborhood selection. I was not picky about neighborhoods but some people have very specific choices so this is good to know before hand.

After matching with my roommate, we discussed things such as apartment priorities, covid safety, guest, lifestyles and decided that we would work well together. I will document my apartment search in a separate post but spoiler alert streeteasy is the king of NYC reality.

A year later, we still get a long great. I have heard so many NYC roommate horror stories and am so thankful to have had such a good experience.
